Single Mums, Double the Strength: Making It Work Against the Ods

Making It Happen: A Salute to Single Mothers Everywhere

Let’s take a moment to recognise the quiet strength of single mothers—especially those raising more than one child, or children with special needs. These women aren’t just juggling packed lunches and school runs; they’re managing entire households, often without consistent support.

In countries like the UK and across Europe, there are systems in place—child benefit, free school meals, subsidised childcare—that help cushion the blow. But in many parts of the Caribbean and beyond, these lifelines simply don’t exist. School fees, uniforms, supplies, transport, daily meals, extracurriculars—it all falls squarely on mum’s shoulders.

And yet, somehow, she makes it work. She stretches every pound, every dollar, every ounce of energy to ensure her children feel safe, loved, and included. She’s the one up late sewing badges onto uniforms, finding creative ways to keep the fridge, cupboards or shelves stocked, and making sure her child with additional needs gets the care they deserve. All while navigating rising costs, limited resources, and the emotional toll of doing it alone. It’s not just resilience—it’s a masterclass in love and logistics.

We often celebrate success in flashy ways, but the real heroes are the ones who show up every day, quietly building futures for their children. These mums deserve more than applause—they deserve structural support, financial relief, and community care. Because no one should have to choose between paying the light bill and buying school shoes.
