Three Dead as Hurricane Melissa Nears Jamaica — Landfall Imminent

Jamaica braces for the full force of Hurricane Melissa today, as the Category 5 storm edges closer to the island’s southwest coast. With winds reaching 175 miles per hour and pressure dropping rapidly, Melissa is expected to make landfall by early afternoon, bringing catastrophic conditions to communities already reeling from its outer bands. The death toll currently stands at three, a grim reminder of the storm’s deadly potential even before its centre arrives.

Emergency services have been stretched thin as flash flooding, landslides and coastal surges begin to impact vulnerable areas. Residents are urged to shelter in place, avoid low-lying and coastal zones, and contact disaster management teams if evacuation becomes necessary. Communication lines may falter as the storm intensifies, and power outages are likely across much of the island.

The Jamaican Meteorological Service has issued its highest level of alert, warning that total structural failure is possible in areas directly hit by the storm’s eye. The southern coast, particularly communities in Westmoreland and St Elizabeth, are expected to bear the brunt of the impact. Authorities continue to monitor Melissa’s movement closely, with real-time updates being broadcast via radio and emergency networks.

As the nation prepares for the worst, there is a collective call for unity and caution. Let this serve as a sobering example of nature’s unpredictability and power. Stay alert, stay cautious, stay kind and stay alive. Let us continue to pray for Jamaica, with hope that the death toll remains at three. May those who have already lost their lives rest in peace.
