They call him Paul Candler, former Director of Overseas Territories and one-time Acting Governor of Anguilla — a man who was once received with open arms and deep respect on the island. But in a shocking turn, reports now suggest that Candler, here in the United Kingdom, literally avoided and ran from Anguilla Government officials, Hayden Hughes and Dr. Ellis Webster, refusing even basic engagement. The same man who once represented Britain’s authority in Anguilla, championed as a friend and ally, suddenly turned his back when it came to accountability on home soil.

This isn’t merely a matter of bad manners — it’s a glaring metaphor for Britain’s relationship with its Overseas Territories. When the BOTs are useful, they’re paraded as part of the “British family.” When they ask to be heard, they’re treated as inconvenient guests.

Candler’s apparent evasion of Anguillan representatives in London embodies that hypocrisy: the UK’s willingness to enjoy the prestige of ownership without any of the responsibility that should accompany it.

If Britain truly respected these territories, officials like Candler would face scrutiny for such behaviour. But instead, this silence speaks volumes. The message seems clear — the BOTs matter only when Britain needs them. When the tables turn, when questions are asked, and when accountability is due, the very officials meant to uphold British dignity are the first to run.
