Nepal is reeling from one of its most devastating natural disasters in recent memory after a massive glacier collapsed high in the Himalayas, triggering a chain reaction that unleashed violent floods across mountain communities. More than 5,000 army and police personnel have been deployed, supported by every available aircraft in the country, including 14 helicopters conducting nonstop rescue missions. Thousands of residents remain stranded in remote mountain regions, many left staring at the ruins of homes that stood for generations. Relief workers warn that the danger is far from over. The enormous volume of debris forced into Nepal’s river systems has created unstable blockages downstream, raising fears of secondary flooding events that could strike without warning.
Experts say the disaster is part of a much larger and deeply troubling trend. Nepal’s mountains have lost nearly one‑third of their ice in just 30 years, according to UN data. Globally, all 19 major glacier regions recorded net ice loss for the fourth consecutive year in 2025. A recent study found that six of the seven highest glacier‑loss years ever recorded occurred within the past seven years — a warning sign that collapses like this may become more frequent. As Nepal mourns, searches continue, and communities brace for what comes next, the country is urging the world to keep its people in their thoughts as they confront a disaster that feels almost apocalyptic in scale.
