Survivor Accounts and Possible Causes
Passengers described the ferry suddenly lifting out of the water, slamming back down and taking on water through a ruptured bow section. Some reported hearing a blast near the front of the vessel moments before it rolled over. These accounts form part of the investigation but have not yet been confirmed.
Officials say the ferry began taking on water within minutes of departure, though the exact cause remains unclear. Weather conditions, structural integrity, crew decisions and the possibility of an external impact are all under scrutiny.
Cyprus has seen several ferry and small‑boat tragedies over the years, but some remain shrouded in mystery — including vessels that vanished without clear cause and accidents where investigators never identified what triggered the sinking.
Arrests and Allegations
The captain and seven crew members have been arrested. Witnesses claim the captain was among the first to abandon ship, leaving passengers scrambling for life jackets—some reportedly without access to any flotation devices. Authorities have promised a full investigation, stating that any negligence will be exposed.
The arrested captain of the Filojet ferry, Mehmet Karaca, is led away by authorities as survivors recount moments of terror—screaming, clinging to railings and begging for life jackets as the vessel rolled violently and began taking on water. Many said they feared they would never make it out alive.
Families Waiting for Answers
Relatives have gathered at Kyrenia’s port and local hospitals, waiting for updates as officials work to identify the missing. Several children remain in intensive care. A three‑day mourning period has been declared in northern Cyprus as the search continues.
