Ed Sheeran Breaks Silence on Macklemore Fallout During Emotional Philadelphia Concert

Singer addresses fans directly after opening acts quit in solidarity with dropped rapper

Ed Sheeran has publicly addressed the controversy surrounding the removal of rapper Macklemore from his Loop Tour, using his first concert since the fallout to apologise to fans and explain the position he found himself in. Performing alone at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field, Sheeran faced a crowd eager for answers after a week that saw Macklemore removed from the tour and every remaining opening act withdraw in protest. 

The controversy began after Macklemore used recent tour appearances to voice support for Palestine, including chants of "Free Palestine" and performances of his protest song Hind's Hall. In the days that followed, Macklemore revealed he had been dropped from the remaining US dates. Sheeran later stated that the decision had been made by promoters and venues, not by him personally, claiming some venues had indicated shows would not proceed with Macklemore remaining on the bill. 

The fallout intensified when support acts Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe and Sheeran's long-time collaborators Beoga all withdrew from the tour in solidarity with Macklemore. The departures left Sheeran without any opening acts, forcing major changes to the Philadelphia show schedule and placing the British superstar at the centre of an increasingly polarised debate over free speech, politics and live entertainment.

Addressing the audience before performing, Sheeran admitted the situation had forced him into difficult decisions and acknowledged making mistakes. He described the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as "catastrophic and unjustifiable", while also reflecting on the horrors of the October 7 attacks in Israel. The speech marked one of the most politically candid moments of his career, signalling that the controversy has become impossible for him to ignore as the Loop Tour continues under intense public scrutiny.
