Manchester Woman Held ‘Hostage in Her Own Life’ as Elliot Bulman Jailed for 20 Years Over Brutal Abuse

Court heard victim was isolated from loved ones, constantly monitored and subjected to rape, coercive control and violent assaults throughout pregnancy and motherhood.

A woman who described herself as a “hostage in my own life” has spoken of the devastating abuse she suffered at the hands of Elliot Allen Bulman. The 22-year-old, of Peel Hall Road in Manchester, was sentenced at Bolton Crown Court to 15 years in prison, with an additional five years on licence, after being convicted of serious offences including rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, non-fatal strangulation and violent assault.

The court heard that Bulman gradually isolated the woman from her family and friends, monitored her phone and dictated who she could speak to. His abuse continued throughout her pregnancy, when she was reportedly prevented from attending appointments alone or speaking privately to healthcare professionals. After she gave birth, the violence intensified, with the new mother assaulted while holding her newborn baby.

"I thought he would kill me." A survivor's harrowing testimony helped bring her abuser to justice after years of control, isolation and violence. Watch LBC's report below on the sentencing that has shocked Greater Manchester.

Her experience exposes the frightening reality of domestic abuse against women: it does not always begin with an obvious act of violence. Control can develop quietly through surveillance, isolation, manipulation and fear, leaving victims cut off from the very people who may recognise what is happening. The survivor eventually escaped when her baby was several months old, telling the court that she believed remaining in the relationship could have proved fatal.

The shocking case of Elliot Allen Bulman comes just days after another major conviction involving the rape and sexual assault of two 14-year-old girls, underscoring the devastating impact of abuse, coercion and violence that continues to destroy lives across England....read full story here.

Bulman must serve at least two-thirds of his prison term before he can be considered for release. He will also be required to register with police indefinitely and is subject to a restraining order protecting the survivor and her immediate family for at least 20 years. The sentence cannot undo what she endured, but her courage in speaking publicly sends a powerful message: abuse behind closed doors must never be dismissed, excused or allowed to remain hidden.
