An Amber Alert was issued after a planned custody handover failed to take place, triggering an urgent search for the young boy and his father. Share A desperate search for a missing four-year-old boy and his father has ended in tragedy after both were found dead, days after authorities raised the alarm over the child's disappearance. With nearly one million young people reported outside work and education, hospitality giants are stepping forward with a major employment pledge.
LONDON — Some of Britain’s biggest restaurant, hotel and pub operators have joined forces in a major employment drive aimed at creating 100,000 paid placements and job opportunities for young people who are currently out of work and education.
The three-year initiative, announced on 15 October 2026, brings together the hospitality industry, trade body UKHospitality and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), with a particular focus on 18 to 24-year-olds classed as NEET, meaning they are not in education, employment or training.
The move follows a similar 100,000-opportunity initiative involving the retail sector. Former Marks & Spencer chief executive Marc Bolland, who has been involved in that effort, is also helping coordinate the hospitality push.
Some of the UK’s most recognisable high-street names are taking part, including McDonald’s, Burger King, Nando’s, Wagamama, Premier Inn, Fuller’s and Mitchells & Butlers. Central to the initiative is a commitment to paid opportunities rather than unpaid work experience.
Young people will be offered structured workplace placements lasting up to four weeks, designed to help them build essential workplace skills, develop confidence and receive support and mentoring.
The wider ambition is to turn those initial opportunities into a pathway towards longer-term employment across the hospitality sector during the three-year programme.
The initiative comes amid growing concern over the number of young people outside employment and education. Recent Office for National Statistics figures cited in reports put the number at close to 981,000, highlighting the scale of the challenge facing the Government, employers and young adults trying to enter the workforce.
The commitment also comes at a difficult time for hospitality businesses, which continue to face pressure from operating costs, wage bills and employer National Insurance contributions.
Despite those challenges, the industry is positioning the programme as an investment in the next generation of workers. By opening up 100,000 potential pathways into employment, participating businesses hope the initiative can give thousands of young people a crucial first step into work while building a future talent pipeline for British hospitality.
