Five secondary schools serving Tipton and Wednesbury have been invited to take part in a major Government programme designed to give more young people access to opportunities beyond the classroom.
Local MP Antonia Bance announced that Q3 Tipton, Phoenix Collegiate, Gospel Oak, Wodensborough and Sandwell Community School are among those selected for the Government’s Enrichment Expansion Programme. The national scheme is backed by £22.5 million and will support more than 400 secondary schools in disadvantaged communities across England.
The programme aims to widen access to activities including sport, music, volunteering and outdoor learning, alongside opportunities such as engineering clubs and debating. Government guidance says enrichment is intended to help young people develop confidence, new skills and a stronger sense of belonging, while keeping them engaged with education.
Bance said the programme was particularly important because young people who could benefit most from these opportunities can sometimes miss out. She pledged to keep working to ensure children across Tipton and Wednesbury have the opportunities they deserve, both inside and outside the classroom.
The investment has a wider national purpose. A survey involving more than 14,000 young people found demand for greater access to enriching activities, alongside safe spaces, trusted adults and better mental health support. The Government has committed to halving the participation gap in enrichment between disadvantaged young people and their peers by 2035.
For local families, the announcement could open the door to a broader range of experiences for pupils at the five schools. Government information states that participating schools will begin receiving support from January 2027, with the focus on helping schools expand and improve the activities they can offer young people.
