Proceedings have opened at Southwark Crown Court, with prosecutors expected to begin presenting evidence later this week.
A jury has been selected in the trial of comedian and actor Russell Brand, who is facing seven charges of rape and sexual offences involving six women. Proceedings began at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, 12 October, with jurors chosen ahead of what is expected to be a closely watched trial. The hearing was adjourned until Tuesday, with prosecutors expected to begin presenting their case later this week. Brand denies all allegations and has pleaded not guilty.
Brand rose to prominence in Britain during the 2000s through a successful career in comedy, radio and television. He became widely known as the host of Big Brother's Big Mouth and later worked as a BBC radio presenter before moving into Hollywood films including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. In recent years, he has cultivated a large online following, regularly sharing commentary on politics, religion and current affairs.
The allegations against Brand first drew widespread public attention in September 2023 following a joint investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4's Dispatches. At the time, four women made allegations of sexual offences and abusive behaviour. Brand strongly denied the claims. Following those reports, the Metropolitan Police launched an investigation after receiving a number of complaints. Those original media allegations should not be confused with the charges now being considered by the court.
@gbnews Russell Brand has left court Southwark Crown Court as the rape and sexual assault trial against him commences. The 51-year-old comedian, actor and podcaster faces seven charges relating to six different women, with the alleged offences spanning a decade from 1999 to 2009. Mr Brand has been charged with three counts of rape, three of sexual assault and a single count of indecent assault. He has entered not guilty pleas to every charge. The current prosecution case includes three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. Prosecutors allege the offences involved six women and relate to incidents said to have taken place between 1999 and 2009. The claims will now be scrutinised through witness testimony and evidence presented before the jury. The women involved are legally entitled to anonymity.
This is not Brand's first court appearance in connection with the case. He initially appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 2 May 2025 after being charged over allegations involving four women. Since then, he has attended several hearings, including a pre-trial hearing at Southwark Crown Court on 6 October 2026.
The trial is expected to attract significant public and media attention in the weeks ahead. While Brand maintains his innocence and the allegations remain contested, the proceedings also highlight the challenges many victims of sexual violence face when seeking justice. Reporting allegations, engaging with investigations and waiting for cases to reach court can be an emotionally demanding process. Ultimately, the case against Brand will be determined solely on the evidence presented before the jury and the verdict reached through the legal process.
