The Emmy-winning actor leaves behind an extraordinary screen legacy spanning film, television and generations.
Hollywood has lost one of its most recognisable and enduring character actors. Tom Skerritt, the veteran star whose remarkable career stretched across more than six decades and included unforgettable appearances in Top Gun, Alien, MAS*H and Picket Fences, died on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, aged 93. His family confirmed that he died of natural causes.
Born Thomas Roy Skerritt in Detroit, Michigan, on 25 August 1933, Skerritt served for four years in the US Air Force before pursuing the path that would eventually make him a familiar face to generations of film and television viewers. He studied at institutions including Wayne State University and UCLA before leaving education to focus on acting, making his film debut in War Hunt in 1962.
His breakthrough came with MAS*H in 1970, but Skerritt would continue building a remarkably varied body of work. In 1979 he played Captain Dallas in Ridley Scott's science-fiction horror classic Alien, and in 1986 he became Commander Mike "Viper" Metcalf in Top Gun, the experienced flight instructor and mentor to Tom Cruise's Maverick. Those performances helped cement his place in films that became cultural landmarks.
Yet his career was far bigger than those famous roles. Skerritt appeared in productions including Steel Magnolias, A River Runs Through It, Contact, Cheers and The West Wing. Television brought him one of his greatest professional honours when his portrayal of Sheriff Jimmy Brock in Picket Fences earned him the 1993 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
Away from Hollywood, Skerritt's life also reflected his commitment to service. He co-founded the Red Badge Project, which supports military veterans through storytelling and creative expression. His family remembered not simply the celebrated actor seen on screen, but a man defined by humour, curiosity, wisdom, generosity and love, with deep interests in creativity, storytelling, veterans, nature and helping others discover their own voices.
Tom Skerritt leaves behind his wife, Julie Tokashiki, five children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as an extraordinary screen legacy stretching from the early 1960s into the 2020s. For millions he will remain Captain Dallas, Sheriff Jimmy Brock or Top Gun's unforgettable Viper, but behind those characters stood an actor whose quiet authority, warmth and versatility made him compelling without needing to command the spotlight. His death closes an extraordinary chapter in American film and television, but more than 60 years of performances ensure Tom Skerritt will not soon be forgotten.
