British Adventurer Finally Returns Home After Walking the World for 28 Years

Imagine leaving home as a young man and not walking back through the door until nearly three decades later. For British adventurer Karl Bushby, that became reality on Monday, 2 November, when he finally returned to Hull after an extraordinary 28-year journey around the world.

Bushby set off from Punta Arenas in southern Chile on 1 November 1998, determined to make his way home without using transport to move himself forward. He was 29 when the adventure began. Now 57, the former British paratrooper has covered around 31,000 miles, crossing four continents and dozens of countries in a journey few could imagine completing.

This was never an ordinary long-distance walk. Bushby crossed the frozen Bering Strait between Alaska and Russia, battled through the dangerous Darién Gap and faced lengthy setbacks involving borders, visas and authorities. To remain faithful to his challenge, he even swam across the Caspian Sea and, during the final stretch towards Britain, the English Channel.

Hundreds of people gathered to welcome him back to Hull, turning his final steps into a homecoming worthy of a journey that had consumed much of his adult life. But the most powerful moment came away from all the miles and records. Bushby finally reached his mother's home and embraced Angela, bringing the adventure back to the very place he had left in 1998.

Reflecting on those who helped him survive and continue, Bushby made it clear this was never his achievement alone. “They say it takes a village but literally it took a world to get me here,” he said, paying tribute to the kindness of strangers he encountered along the way.

Twenty-eight years, thousands of miles and countless obstacles later, the finish was remarkably simple: home. Karl Bushby left Britain chasing what sounded like an impossible idea and returned having turned it into an extraordinary story of endurance, stubborn determination and refusing to give up.
