Britain Urged to Grant Humanitarian Visas to Jamaicans

London, UK – Pressure is mounting on the British government to extend humanitarian visas to Jamaicans displaced by Hurricane Melissa, as campaigners warn that families are being left behind in a worsening crisis.  The devastating storm has left thousands homeless across Jamaica, with floodwaters triggering outbreaks of leptospirosis and forcing communities into unsafe shelters. Many of those affected have close relatives in the UK, yet no emergency visa scheme has been announced.

@jamradiouk URGENT APPEAL: In the wake of Hurricane Melissa, many Jamaicans, especially children & the elderly are displaced. 🇯🇲 We call on the UK Government to show compassion by offering Humanitarian Visas so families can reunite with loved ones in Britain. 🇬🇧 #visaforjamaicans #VisasForJamaicans #Jamaica #JamaicaStrong #fyp ♬ original sound - 🔴🟢🟡🎙JamRadio UK🎙🔴🟢🟡

Campaigners argue that Britain has a moral duty to act, citing Jamaica’s historic contributions to the UK. From fighting in Britain’s wars to rebuilding its cities during the Windrush era, Jamaicans have played a vital role in shaping modern Britain. Today, King Charles remains Jamaica’s Head of State, underscoring the enduring ties between the two nations.

“Humanitarian visas should have been offered immediately,” said one petition participant. “The fact that Jamaicans must rely on a petition to demand basic compassion is unacceptable. Britain cannot turn its back on a country that has stood with it for generations.”

The petition calls for:

  • Humanitarian visas for those affected by Hurricane Melissa
  • Priority for Jamaicans with family in the UK
  • Recognition of Jamaica’s historic service to Britain
  • Immediate action from His Majesty’s Government

Campaigners point to Britain’s swift response to the war in Ukraine, where the “Homes for Ukraine” scheme provided refuge to thousands. They argue that Jamaicans deserve the same urgency and compassion.  “This is not charity—it is justice,” the petition states. “Families are suffering, children are missing school, and elders are without care. Britain must act now.”

Supporters are being urged to sign the petition, contact their MPs, and share the campaign widely. Organisers say the goal is clear: to ensure Jamaicans impacted by Hurricane Melissa can reunite with loved ones in the UK and rebuild their lives in safety.
