His passion for agriculture, sustainability, and cultural preservation has now culminated in Anguilla’s first-ever Breadfruit Festival, an event that has captured regional attention and sparked new conversations about food security across the Caribbean.

For Salih, agriculture in Anguilla is both personal and ancestral. He points out that Anguilla is a limestone island — one of the most limestone‑dominant in the Caribbean — where generations of Anguillians learned to grow food in conditions many would consider unworkable.
Shallow, rocky soils, low natural fertility, and a constant reliance on composting and organic amendments shaped a tradition of resilience and innovation. That history now informs his mission: to remind the island that food security begins at home, through backyard gardens, community plots, and a renewed commitment to producing what is consumed.

The Breadfruit Festival emerged from this vision. Held in Anguilla in early January 2026, the event placed breadfruit — a crop originally carried from the Pacific Islands to the Caribbean in the 18th century , at the centre of a celebration that stunned neighbouring islands and drew visitors from across the region.

Once undervalued despite its remarkable nutritional profile, breadfruit is naturally gluten‑free, rich in fibre, packed with vitamins, and versatile enough to replace rice, potatoes, or flour. Its resilience in harsh climates and high yield per tree make it one of the most promising foods for Caribbean food security.
The festival boosted tourism numbers, showcased Anguilla’s innovation, and highlighted breadfruit as a true Caribbean superfood. The Anguilla Tourist Board supported several aspects of the event and is expected to continue its sponsorship, recognising agro‑tourism as a growing niche with real economic potential. Salih is committed to expanding agricultural education, particularly among young people.
He hopes to see home grown foods featured far more prominently in schools, giving children the opportunity to connect with their own culinary heritage rather than being shaped by fast‑food culture. For Salih, agriculture must begin in the classroom — not only on the plate, but in the curriculum, where young Anguillians can learn to grow what they eat and understand the value of food production from an early age.

With plans to plant between 50 and 100 breadfruit trees before the end of the year (in addition to existing stock), favourable weather conditions, and a community increasingly aware of the importance of sustainability, he sees Anguilla standing on the edge of a new agricultural movement.
