Couple Found Guilty After Two‑Year‑Old Dies With 21 Broken Bones in Thornaby Home

A mother and her boyfriend have been convicted of murdering her two‑year‑old daughter after a jury heard how the toddler endured weeks of severe abuse before suffering the fatal injuries that ended her life. Isabelle Welsh collapsed at her home in Thornaby in September 2025 and died the following day in hospital. Doctors found she had a fractured skull, catastrophic brain damage and dozens of other injuries, including 21 broken bones inflicted over several weeks.

Teesside Crown Court was told that Isabelle’s mother, Alexandra Walker, 25, and her partner, 22‑year‑old Harrison Simpson, were the only adults regularly caring for the child. Prosecutors said the pair carried out a sustained campaign of violence and sexual abuse shortly after Simpson entered the household. The extent of Isabelle’s injuries, they argued, made it impossible for Walker not to have known what was happening. Despite this, she continued to leave her daughter alone with Simpson, even though she suspected he posed a danger to children.

On the morning Isabelle suffered her fatal injuries, Simpson was alone with her while Walker remained upstairs after a night of drinking and drug use. Walker later called emergency services claiming her daughter had suddenly collapsed. Throughout the trial, both defendants attempted to blame each other for Isabelle’s suffering, insisting they had no involvement in the violence. Jurors rejected their accounts after more than six hours of deliberation.

Simpson was unanimously found guilty of murder, child cruelty and sexually assaulting a child. Walker was convicted of murder by a majority verdict and unanimously found guilty of cruelty. She was cleared of sexually assaulting her daughter. The judge, Ms Justice Norton, said both will receive life sentences, with minimum terms to be set on Thursday.

In a statement released after the verdicts, Isabelle’s family said the toddler had been “robbed of her future” and described their loss as “heartbreaking.” They said the verdicts could not undo the pain caused but offered some sense of justice. Investigators echoed the family’s sentiments, describing Isabelle as a child who should have grown up surrounded by love but instead suffered unimaginable harm at the hands of those meant to protect her.
