Authorities say Khaled Menadli deliberately targeted vulnerable victims withdrawing cash
A man who targeted vulnerable people withdrawing money from cash machines across London has been jailed for four years and six months. The Metropolitan Police said Khaled Menadli waited beside ATMs for victims to withdraw cash before stealing their money, often using intimidation and speed to prevent them from reacting.
Investigators found that many of Menadli’s victims were women, elderly people or individuals with mobility issues. Police said his behaviour showed a clear pattern of selecting those least able to defend themselves or seek immediate help. According to recent UK crime data, women are disproportionately targeted in public-space thefts, with women aged 18 to 34 experiencing street theft at a rate 27% higher than men. Elderly women are also more likely to be victims of distraction thefts at ATMs, with a 22% higher victimisation rate compared with elderly men.

ATM-related thefts in London rose by 15% in 2024, and police say offenders often choose victims who appear isolated, distracted or unsure when using cash machines. A 2025 YouGov survey found that 62% of women in the UK feel unsafe using outdoor ATMs at night, while 41% avoid withdrawing cash alone due to fear of theft or harassment. One in five women reported experiencing unwanted approaches or intimidation near cash machines.
The Metropolitan Police said Menadli’s conviction highlights the risks faced by vulnerable people during everyday tasks. Officers reiterated that withdrawing money should be a safe and routine activity, adding: “A trip to the cash machine shouldn’t end in robbery.”
Khaled Menadli, who targeted vulnerable women and elderly victims at cash machines across London, was arrested at his home before being jailed for four years and six months following a Metropolitan Police investigation.
Police are urging the public to remain alert when using ATMs, particularly if someone appears to be watching or standing unusually close. They advise cancelling the transaction if possible, moving away to a secure location and contacting police if they believe they are being followed or targeted.
Menadli’s sentence brings his series of offences to wider attention and serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance, especially for women and vulnerable individuals who continue to face disproportionate risks in public spaces.
