The Emmy-winning actor leaves behind an extraordinary screen legacy spanning film, television and generations. Share Hollywood has lost one of its most recognisable and enduring character actors. Tom Skerritt, the veteran star whose remarkable career stretched across more than six decades and included unforgettable appearances in Top Gun, Alien, M A S*H and Picket Fences, died on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, aged 93. His family confirmed that he died of natural causes. Britain is bracing for a turbulent few days of weather as two named storms prepare to sweep across different parts of the country, bringing powerful winds, heavy rain and the potential for travel and power disruption.
Storm Austen is the first to arrive, with conditions expected to deteriorate from Thursday night, 22 October, into Friday. The Met Office says the storm will bring strong winds and heavy rain to southern parts of the UK, with Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly and parts of west Devon potentially seeing gusts of 60 to 70mph. Exposed coastal areas could experience winds reaching 70 to 80mph.
The warning extends much further than the South West. A yellow wind warning covering a large area of England and Wales has been issued, while the Midlands is among the areas expected to experience strong winds on Friday. Forecasts indicate inland gusts of around 45 to 55mph are possible, raising concerns about short-term power cuts and disruption, particularly while many trees remain in full leaf.
But just as Storm Austen clears into the North Sea on Friday evening, another system is waiting in the Atlantic. Storm Boelo is forecast to bring another spell of heavy rain and damaging winds over the weekend, with Northern Ireland, Scotland and parts of northern England expected to face the strongest conditions.
The Met Office has issued yellow wind warnings covering mainland Scotland, the Western Isles, Orkney and the far north of England from Saturday evening into Sunday. Gusts of 55 to 65mph are forecast widely there, with exposed coastal locations and higher ground potentially seeing 70 to 80mph. Northern Ireland is also under a separate yellow warning, where gusts could reach 50 to 60mph widely and 65 to 75mph in exposed areas.
It means Britain could face a stormy run from Friday and through the weekend rather than one isolated burst of bad weather. An active Atlantic jet stream is strengthening areas of low pressure and directing them towards the UK, with further rain and strong winds also possible at the beginning of next week.
For people heading to work, travelling or making weekend plans, the message is simple: keep checking the forecast. With weather warnings already in place and the exact strength and track of the systems still important to local impacts, conditions could vary considerably depending on where you live.
