Keefe D Stands Trial in Tupac Shakur Killing Nearly Three Decades Later

Tupac Shakur's murder trial is finally set to begin, almost 30 years after one of the most infamous killings in music history. The long-awaited courtroom proceedings will see Duane "Keefe D" Davis stand trial over the fatal drive-by shooting that claimed the life of the rap icon in Las Vegas on 7 September 1996. It marks the first time anyone has faced trial over a case that has fuelled decades of conspiracy theories, unanswered questions and one of hip-hop's greatest mysteries.

Davis was arrested in September 2023 and charged with murder with the use of a deadly weapon. Prosecutors allege he orchestrated the attack following a confrontation between Tupac's entourage and Orlando "Baby Lane" Anderson, Davis's nephew, just hours before the shooting. Although Anderson was long suspected by investigators of being the gunman, he was never charged and was killed in an unrelated shooting in 1998. Davis has pleaded not guilty, arguing that statements made in interviews and in his memoir were exaggerated and should not be treated as factual admissions. The trial is expected to last around five weeks, with approximately 45 witnesses expected to testify, including former investigators, police officers and individuals connected to Death Row Records.

One of the biggest controversies surrounding the case extends far beyond the man on trial. For years, allegations have circulated that music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs offered a bounty for the murders of Tupac Shakur and Suge Knight during the height of the East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry. The claims have resurfaced through books, documentaries and, more recently, productions associated with rapper 50 Cent. However, it is important to distinguish allegation from fact. Diddy has consistently denied any involvement, has never been charged in connection with Tupac's murder, and is not a defendant in the current criminal trial. At this stage, those allegations remain unproven.

As the trial begins, the world will once again turn its attention to one of the darkest chapters in music history. After nearly three decades of speculation, investigators, witnesses and jurors will attempt to establish whether justice can finally be delivered. Yet the case continues to divide opinion, with many believing this trial could answer long-standing questions, while others argue the biggest mystery of all may never be fully resolved.
